Preston
& District Snooker League
Established in 1969, the
Preston and District Snooker League is open to sports and
social clubs within a ten mile radius of the centre of Preston,
Lancashire.
The League was set up initially to provide winter activity
for bowling teams playing from social clubs throughout the
summer. As green conditions worsened the players would substitute
snooker green for the bowling green.
Twelve clubs and seventy two people signed up to participate
in the very first season. The numbers of clubs joining the
league grew, in line with the success of snooker in the
seventies and eighties. After peaking at eighty four teams,
the league now consists of five divisions of twelve teams.
Fourty clubs are currently represented, with many clubs
fielding two teams. Five hundred registered players participate
in the League during the season, which stretches for twenty
weeks.
Five current and two recently retired professional players,
with many top class amateurs ensure the standards of yesteryear
are maintained and improved. Two current members of the
World's Top sixty players, regularly participate in Preston's
Wednesday night snooker.
