Strategy

Defined in the dictionary as the "planning and directing of large military movements and operations during campaigns of war".

Now, no-one is suggesting that a snooker match compares in any way with the elements of war, but having said that, there is still considerable benefit in planning and directing your movements in such a way as to maximise your chances of winning.

Steve Davis is sometimes called the "master technician" in appreciation of the knowledge and application of tactics with which he approaches each game / visit to the table. In the modern game John Higgins is renowned for his tactical awareness and safety play.

Playing the correct shot, at the right time, in the right way, can provide openings for a substantial break early in a frame and can often be the difference between winning and losing in a tight frame.

Careful thought and planning pays dividends, both in match play and preparation.
