Manufacturing
Snooker Cues
Manufacturers
import specially selected, kiln dried squares of maple and
ash and South American hardwoods like ebony and rosewood.Once
woods are collected and prepared for use, the basic preparation
of the butt square begins, sawing and shaping and removing
a wedge shape to produce the shape of the splice.
Specially
dried decorative wooden veneers are then glued to the front
splice or splices of the butt, with numbers dependant on the
design of the cue. These are then placed in the bodning oven
for all glues to settle.
The
square butt is then rounded and sawn spliced to accept the
milled end of the shaft. The butt and shaft are then assembled
and glued.
The
wood is then tapered on custom-built machinery. Only a third
of the original butt and shaft remains after the final tapering.
In
the case of two-piece cues the shaft is sawn and the joint
inserted. Joints consist of numerous components employing
specially turned metal parts of the screw and washer type,
designed to provide maximum strength to the joint and provide
perfect cue alignment.
The
cue is weighted and balanced. A lead weight is pushed up the
shaft and secured by the dowel which is then driven and glued
into the central boring. The end of the shaft is either filled
and rounded or as was the case historically, fitted with a
rubber buffer.
The
tip end of the cue is then prepared and shaped and ready to
accept its threaded brass ferrule. The ferrule is fitted and
a tip affixed. The ferrule guards the top of the cue from
erosion when new tips are required on the cue.
Cues
are then horizontally sanded to produce a fine finish and
final overall shape and then either dipped into a sealing
compound or a laquer or varnish applied.. The compound has
the effect of sealing the natural grain of the timber in order
to prevent the loss of moisture content from the wood, thus
minimising warpage and ensuring maximum stability.
The
butt end is rigourously polished through linishing machine
and polishing compound.
Finished
cues are then checked for weight, straightness, balance and
visual effect and the name plate implanted. You are now READY
TO PLAY!
