Far
too often players attempt to gain accurate position on a
single ball, when with a little more thought they could
easily play position onto a choice of available reds.
In this way an error on the positional side of the shot
does not necessarily mean end of break, but may provide
an escape route with two or three balls to pick from.
By
continually playing the shot that gives you the greatest
number of options on the next shot, you reduce the percentages
of breaking down at that visit.
In the picture shown, position has been obtained on the
black after potting a red. A simple stun shot would provide
position on the red on the top cushion, but with a little
more thought position on three reds can be obtained with
a screw shot onto the side cushion and back into the middle
of the table.
Although the degree of difficulty in playing this shot is
higher, the break can continue around the three open reds,
black, pink and blue if required..
Leave a choice of options available as often as you can!
As
your break building skills develop and you begin to make
higher breaks you will find that this may not always be
possible. As the number of reds left on the table diminishes
it is not always possible to 'play the percentages', as
accurate position is sometimes required on a single ball.
