At times the balls will fall in such a way as to create a 'wide' or 'big' pocket.

This occurs when a ball settles close to a pocket, allowing an object ball to be potted into the same pocket by cannoning off the ball that has settled near to the pocket rim.

A ball close to the pocket increases the margins available for making the shot, as one ball assists the others path into the pocket.

Often in circumstances such as these, the first ball enters the pocket without contacting the supporting ball. Although the second ball was available as back-up it is not required and remains available for the remainder of the visit.

Keep your eyes open for these openings, as they often present the opportunity to make a successful pot when in different circumstances you may not consider going for the shot.
